A Region Shaped by the Land
Lismore sits in the heart of the Victorian Volcanic Plains, one of the largest volcanic landscapes on Earth. Stretching across the Western District, these plains were formed by thousands of years of eruptions, lava flows, and the creation of scoria cones like Mount Elephant, which still stands proudly on the horizon today.
The wide open grasslands, fertile basalt soils, stony rises, and crater lakes that surround Lismore are all the result of this ancient volcanic activity. Many of the region’s wetlands and lakes — including nearby Lake Tooliorook — were formed by volcanic explosions that shaped the land long before the first settlers arrived. Before the current hotel was built, the White Swan Hotel at Brown’s Water Hole served as one of the earliest gathering points for travellers and locals moving through this rugged volcanic landscape. As Lismore developed, the need for a more central, purpose-built hotel became clear. The Lismore Hotel Victoria, completed in 1911, was built as a single storey structure to serve the growing community. It quickly became a social hub, hosting events, meals, and meetings that helped shape the identity of the town. More than a century later, the hotel remains a proud part of the region’s story — a place where history, landscape, and community come together.
